Recent Trends in Telecommunication Research

A workshop on  ”Recent Trends in Telecommunication Research” was organised by National ICT R&D Fund in collaboration with COMSATS Institute of Information Technology (CIIT) Islamabad.  The primary goal of the workshop was to present latest development in Telecommunication research  including Fifth Generation (5G) networks and how the local ICT researchers can contribute to related research activities.

The workshop is in a series of events being organized by National ICT R&D Fund to reach out to potential researchers and the ICT Industry. The workshop started with recitation from the Holy Quran.  Dr. Shahzad A. Malik Dean Faculty of Electrical Engineering COMSATS Institute of Information Technology (CIIT) Islamabad presented welcome address. This was followed by a brief talk by GM-Solicitation, Engagement & Evaluation Department National ICT R&D Fund, Mr. Aamir Sami on working of the Fund and the various opportunities available to ICT researchers.

Dr. Faraz Hasan from Messy University, New Zealand was the key note speaker in the event. Dr. Faraz gave detailed presentation on the topics of Fifth Generation (5G) Networks: The Future of Telecommunications, Device-to-Device Communication and Electricity Distribution Networks of Next Generation Smart Grids. Dr. Faraz introduced the participants to the key aspects of Fifth Generation Telecommunications technology and elaborated how the 5G enabled networks can potentially change the traditional telecommunication infrastructure. He also highlighted various technologies that will support 5G mobile networks.

The other speakers included Dr. Saleem Aslam from Bahria University, Islamabad and Dr. Riaz Hussain from CIIT, Islamabad. Dr. Saleem Aslam highlighted the different research aspects related to 5G technologies in his talk.  Dr. Riaz gave a presentation on “Research Ideas and Possible Collaboration”, in which he stressed on making collaborations to target indigenous development of innovative products and services.

Key note speakers’ presentations were followed by couple of students’ talks related to their Ph.D research. Q&A session was also held prior to conclusion of the workshop.
