Executive Summary

The number of amputees has increased due to the prevailing security situation in the country and the recent natural disasters. This combined with the amputation caused by congenital defects and removal of limbs due to disease demands devices like prosthetic limbs. Dilemma is that despite large number of amputees in the country no significant work has been done in the field of “active” prosthesis. Hence, the project aims to develop an EMG controlled light weight, low cost and easy to use Upper prosthetic Limb to facilitate persons who have lost a limb due to accidents, disease or congenital defects. The trans radial limb will be equipped with EMG sensors and will have the capability to detect the muscle signals and replicate the motion of an actual limb. It will be designed such that no technical assistance will be required in placing or removing the limb, the patient will be able to simply place it and use it. This limb will also have the ability to adapt its function from patient to patient depending on the strength of the patient’s arm. The limb would be light weight so that it reduces the amount of extra energy needed to operate the limb. This limb will be covered by a cosmetic glove so that it looks realistic, which is more important to trans radial and trans humeral amputees because they are more likely to have their limb exposed.
